Postdoctoral Positions
“Crystallography without Crystals”

Determining the Structure of Individual Biological Molecules & Nanoparticles

As part of a major new initiative, a limited number of postdoctoral positions are immediately available to develop innovative techniques for determining the structure of single biological molecules and nanoparticles. The project entails developing new theoretical and experimental methods, including:

• Concepts and algorithms for direct structure determination from a large number of noisy 2-D diffraction patterns of unknown orientation;
• Novel means for producing beams of nanoparticles and hydrated biological molecules;
• Short-pulse X-ray scattering with present and next-generation synchrotrons sources and optics.

The work will be conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and state-of-the-art US and European facilities, including the Argonne National Laboratory. The positions may be combined with other prestigious appointments, such as Feodor-Lynen Fellowships of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

This is an outstanding opportunity to work in a burgeoning area at the interface between physics, chemistry, and biology. Candidates with background in relevant experimental or theoretical areas are encouraged to send applications to Prof. Abbas Ourmazd (Ourmazd@uwm.edu), from whom further information can also be obtained. Applications should include a summary of research experience and interests, a resume, and names and contact details for three referees.
