Hi Jackie,
It seems that when the crystal structure of L-alanosine was solved, it was done from a solution made by adding conc. HCl (20 ul) to the compound in water (200 ul).

See ref. in Acta Cryst., 1986, C42, 733-738.

I don't know what the starting pH of the compound in water will be, but I think you can try the above ratio or else try to get the pH between 8-9.
